HISTORY

The Cavapoo is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Miniature or Toy Poodle. They were first bred in the US in the 1950s. With the success of the Cockapoo in the US, smaller breeds such as the Maltese and the Lhasa Apso were picked to crossbreed, for a small and manageable dog for people who desired a low shedding / curly coat.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the most popular breeds for its loyal and affectionate nature, complementing the intelligence and gentleness of the Poodle. This combination of traits from both parents has led to the success of the Cavapoo.

TODAY

Cavapoos are one of the most sought-after breeds, especially in the US. Their quiet, laid-back and affectionate nature makes them the ideal family dog. They are great with young children and have lower energy levels than the Cockapoo and the Labradoodle, making them perfect for first-time dog owners.

F1 Cavapoos are low – non-shedding and tend to have a wavy/shaggy coat, in comparison to the curlier-coated Cavapoochons and F1B Cockapoos.

They can be one solid colour or can have complex markings.

They also may have spots or freckles on their muzzle or legs. In addition, they could have patches over their eyes, cheeks, chest or under tail. Cavapoos may have a merle coat, where parts of the coat are diluted to create a mottled appearance and come in a variety of colours; most commonly cream, golden, apricot, phantom, red, sable and tricolour.

Cavapoos can be bred in Toy or Miniature sizes. The Toy Cavapoos tend to grow to approximately 12 inches to the shoulder, whereas the Miniatures can be approximately 14 inches to the shoulder. Factors such as the size of the Cavalier mum and the Poodle she is mated with will influence this. We like to mate similar-sized parents to ensure the pregnancy and birth is as straightforward as possible.

We usually plan Cavapoo litters each year and have waiting lists for certain colors/genders. As for temperament variation between genders, we say that each puppy is unique. We always advise if you already have a dog, to get the opposite sex, as the same sex can clash.
